Inspirational? More Like, Seeking Inspiration!

Do you ever have writers block? Or have a blank mind when you try to think of something that will be inspirational? I am having a difficult time coming up with or feeling inspired about a blog topic for this week. Melissa and I try to put out thought provoking and inspirational content every day on our Omnisocial media feeds including a once weekly blog, but I am just going to be honest that sometimes I am not feeling very inspired to write about anything specific, and it’s hard for me to fake it. This week happens to be one of those times.

With that said, while I am not feeling super inspirational, I am inspired by different things in my day to day life quite often. Rather than trying to muster up my own inspirational topic for this blog, I am going to share some of the things that are currently inspiring or thought provoking for me in my life. Maybe some of you will find them to be as well.

In my work with clients here in Denver around body image, diet culture, weight stigma and disordered eating, I like to talk about music that is currently inspiring for them. Music is a HUGE source of inspiration, emotional evocation, and grounding for me and I believe the music you are feeling now can offer some insight into what you are currently experiencing in life. At this time, I am feeling super moved by and attuned to a couple of songs. Here they are:

1.    The first one is “I Can Change” by Lake Street Dive. First of all, their music is just so good. If you have not heard them, I highly encourage you to check them out and start with this song. I love this song because it speaks to the process of change as a human and how we can embrace change throughout our lives. It is also melodic, soulful, and beautiful and evokes all the feels for me!

2.    The second song that I am loving right now is “Hunger” by Florence and the Machine. This one is great because it speaks to the journey of recovery – from eating disorders, addictions, or anything really. For me, it also represents the human need for connection and the hunger we all experience for this.

In addition to being a music lover, I am also a big fan of self-growth. I notice that the more I get to know myself, the more I realize I don’t know. There are so many layers to peel away. For this reason, I am usually reading about five or six books at any given time. My partner often jokes that I carry a stack of books around our house because I never know which one I will be inspired by in each moment. I find reading to be a source of continued learning and reflection on new ideas. Here are a few books that have spoken to me recently:

1.    The first book is Rage Becomes Her by Soraya Chemaly. Wow. Just wow. This book has touched my soul on so many levels. It addresses how not only it is normal for women to experience anger but also that we are culturally stigmatized when we express it. This book discusses how our anger is rooted in justice. My favorite concept that is introduced is the idea that anger bridges the gap between what is and what ought to be. It also describes anger as being a necessary emotion to evoke change.

2.    The Body Is Not an Apology by Sonya Renee Taylor is the second book that has moved me recently. I love this book tremendously and highly recommend it for you if you have ever struggled in your relationship with your body. It defines the concepts of body terrorism and radical self-love. The book brings light to the ways in which our society has upheld systems of oppression and that all oppression is directed at our bodies. It also goes into tangible ways to start to practice radical self-love in your own life.

If you think about it, inspiration is all around you when you take a minute to soak it in. I am grateful for all of the sources that bring me inventiveness, creativity, and joy on a day-to-day basis. I hope that this post reminds you to seek your own sources of inspiration in your recovery, your path of self-growth, or simply in your everyday experiences.
